breaking the viscometer, do not pull from the front
tube.

sensor.
When ready for a test, the assembly is placed into
the instrument by carefully lowering it through the
viscometer port. Plug the sensor into a sensor
port.
NOTE
: Make sure the fibers are of equal length
before plugging in (See Figure 11, below).

5.4 Adjusting the Sensors
In order for the optical sensors to provide
optimal performance, adjustments can be made to
their sensitivity in detecting fluid movement past
each of the timing positions.
Figure 12 shows the viscosity bath with the
viewing mirror placed on top of the bath. The
viewing mirror allows the operator to easily make
adjustments to the sensors while remaining in
front of the bath. Figure 13 shows a close up view
of the sensor indicator lights and adjustment
screws. Each sensor indicator corresponds to two
wires leading up to two sensor devices, the
transmitter and the receiver.
When the signal can pass between the two
sensors, the upper orange light will be on. When
the signal is interrupted (when a meniscus passes
through) the orange light will flicker or turn off.
The three lights correspond to the three possible
sensors in an assembly. Note that some
assemblies only have two.

Figure 13. Sensor Indicator Lights and Adjustment Screws
For optimal performance, the adjustment
screw must be set at the threshold exactly when
the sensors can detect a signal (when the orange
light is ON).
1. Engage a viscometer filled with sample into
the assembly. Place it into the bath and plug
it into the sensor ports.
2. Start an Automatic test (See Section 5.5. Do
NOT uncork the tube; it must be filled during
this adjustment).
3. The orange light should be ON. Begin to
turn the screw COUNTERCLOCKWISE. As
you turn, the orange light will begin to flicker
and eventually turn off. Turn the screw back,
CLOCKWISE. The light begins to flicker and
then turn back ON. Adjust the screw back
and forth until it is set to where the light just
turns back ON. The closer the screw is set
at this threshold with the light ON, the more
sensitive the sensor is.
4. Repeat adjustment for each sensor signal.
5. Stop the test by pressing F2/Stop.
