Functional Description
no dependency on electrical parameters of the fluid such as conductivity or dielectric
constant.
With FLUXUS, flow values can be determined immediately, in a non-invasive manner
from the outside of pipes, and without interruption of the process. Mounting of the trans-
ducers is straightforward, so that flow measurements can be made at various locations in
the plant and on pipes with different diameters. The installation does not require any
alterations to the pipe system, and it does not influence the cross-sectional area of the
pipe nor the actual flow conditions.
Using FLUXUS, one of the biggest advantages in comparison with other flow measuring
techniques (orifice plates, variable area meters, electromagnetic flowmeters, vortex
flowmeters, and others) is when measurements have to be undertaken at various
locations at different times, e.g. the maintenance of a pipe system, plant start-up,
commissioning of process equipment, or operational production checks.
Often, FLUXUS is the only acceptable solution for the flow measurement on pipes with
very large diameters or in situations where, for technical and economical reasons, the use
of other flowmeter systems is restricted. This is especially true if the process facility
cannot be shut-down for the installation of a flowmeter.
For permanent installations, there are particular advantages where aggressive media
(acids, bases, poisonous fluids) would considerably diminish the lifetime of insertion
devices or prohibit the use of any type of insertion flowmeter at all.
FLUXUS displays error messages if specific operating conditions are present which
prevent measurement. Such conditions might include the following:
••••
Heavy
internal
deposits on the inner pipewall
The ultrasound will be too heavily attenuated by these deposits. However, the
sensitivity of the FLUXUS electronics is currently the best available on the market.
FLUXUS will still provide correct measuring results where other clamp-on ultrasonic
flowmeters would fail.
••••
Disturbing particles (solid particles, gas bubbles)
Particles scatter and absorb the ultrasound in the liquid and, therefore, attenuate the
signal. If the proportion of solid particles or gas bubbles increases to more than 10 %,
measurements might not be possible any more with the transit-time mode. However,
the unit can still give meaningful results using a secondary measurement mode called
NoiseTrek
, a measuring mode which actually relies on particles and/or gas bubbles
in the liquid.
••••
Inner-lined
pipes
Lined pipes may cause measurement difficulties if the lining is not bonded correctly to
the pipewall, or consists of a material which has bad acoustic characteristics.
••••
Gases
Gases prevent flow measurements with clamp-on transducers in principle.
••••
Porous pipe materials, e.g. concrete
For such materials, measurements are only possible in certain conditions, and are
sometimes impossible.
••••
Liquids with viscosity values of more than 1000 mm
2
/s
These liquids would restrict the application of FLUXUS. High viscosity values
