We will tune the VOR frequencies into the Captain’s radio, the first radio on the left-hand stack of the centre
pedestal. The radio allows two frequencies to be set, active and standby. The first frequency to set is ironically
the second frequency that we’ll need, Honiley (HON) VOR in Birmingham. The frequency is
113.65
. To set this
frequency, use the left-hand dual tuning knob. Once set, use the right-hand knob to swap frequencies, putting
the VOR into the standby slot. Now tune Compton (CPT) VOR,
114.35
, into the active slot.
For greater situational awareness you can also tune the nearby Woodley (WOD) NDB, using the ADF 1 radio
located aft of the NAV 1 radio. The frequency for the ADF is
352.0
. Tuning it is simple, with each of the four dials
operating a single digit.
Moving back up to the Captain’s panel, set the Flight Director switch to VOR LOC. This will command the flight
director to provide guidance towards Compton VOR. On the CDI, rotate the COURSE knob to select a course of
275
degrees. This is the course from Heathrow to the Compton VOR. The currently selected course is shown in
the centre of the CDI gauge.
Starting the engines
We can now prepare to start the engines, but first we need to close the doors and remove the air stairs and
baggage carts. Press [
Shift]+[E]+[3]
and
[Shift]+[E]+[4]
to close the cargo doors and then
[Shift]+[E]
and
[Shift]+[E]+[2]
to close the passenger doors. Press the
GROUND CREW JACK
switch to remove the ground
equipment.
