If we’re fortunate, once we enter Canadian airspace we could be given a shortcut or a ‘direct to X’ from ATC.
The INS allows us to quickly navigate to a different waypoint. Rotate the CDU mode selector to
DIS/TIME
and
press the
WY PT CHG
button. If we wanted to navigate directly to waypoint 6 from our current position, you
would press the
0
key (corresponding to our current position) on the CDU keypad followed by the
6
key. The INS
now provides direct navigation to waypoint 6. If we’d like to go direct from waypoint 3 to 6, the procedure is the
same; just press
3
and then
6
.
Landfall and updating the INS
We should reach the coast of Canada after approximately three hours. Now is a good time to check the API for
the INS, which can indicate a significant drift after a transatlantic crossing.
The use of Aided Inertial Operation should have helped maintain our accuracy and we can now use the YBC VOR
to reduce our API further. The YBC VOR should correspond to waypoint 5 on the CDUs. With the CDU mode
selector set to
DIS/TIME
, right-click on the
9
key and then left-click on the
7
key. Press the
WY PT CHG
button
and then left-click on the
5
key to select the YBC VOR. Press the
INSERT
key to confirm the selection. Once in
range of the VOR, the INS will automatically improve their accuracy, as shown by a decreasing API value.
Descent and landing
After our long cruise we need to begin our descent into Montreal. Our top of descent (TOD) begins at waypoint
TAMKO. This also marks the start of the last waypoints that we need to enter. We’re expecting an arrival to
runway 06R at Montreal, so these last seven waypoints should bring us in for a final approach.
Aim to arrive at PIGNA at 5,000ft with our NAV 1 radio tuned to
110.50
, ready to intercept the localiser. From
there it is a long downwind to waypoint FRANX and then onto the final fix of FULFO. At FRANX we can begin to
reduce our speed to
180
knots and extend the flaps to position 1. On reaching FULFO we can reduce our speed
further to
160
knots and extend the flaps to position 2.
From FULFO we intercept the ILS for runway 06R. Engage
GS Auto Mode
to carry out an automated ILS
approach. With 8NM left to run, extend the flaps to full and extend the landing gear. Reduce the airspeed to
150
knots and monitor the approach.
Using the same procedure as in the first tutorial, carry out the remainder of the approach and landing and then
taxi to the nearest gate and complete the shutdown checklist.
Congratulations – you’ve just completed a transatlantic crossing in an iconic sixties jet airliner using INS for
navigation!
