Rotate the CDU mode selectors to
DIS/TIME
and right-click on the
9
key and then left-click on the 7 key. Rotate
the Waypoint/DME selector to select waypoint

, which corresponds to the first VOR on our route – TRN. The
distance to the VOR is shown in the left-hand display.
Press the WY PT CHG key and then press the 3 key to select the waypoint. Finally, press the INSERT key to
complete the process.
The INS will now operate in Aided Inertial Operation mode. Once past the TRN VOR/DME, we can repeat the
DIS/TIME and waypoint selection steps to update our selection to the next VOR/DME on the route.
In flight
With the INS aligned and waypoints entered, we’re free to taxi out and take off. Our departure today is from
runway 30. Taxi to the runway and take off, using the same procedures that were covered in the first tutorial
flight.
As you climb through 1,000ft, engage the autopilot and the NAV (navigation hold) switch. The autopilot will now
follow the guidance information supplied by the INS.
Continue to climb as we turn towards the TRN VOR. Engage altitude hold mode and set the altitude selector to
6,000ft
using either the datum control or the dial above the Captain’s altimeter. Finally, engage
IAS
hold mode
and accelerate to
250
knots.
We should pass over the TRN VOR at 6,000ft and as we turn towards the next waypoint, select our cruising
altitude of
31,000ft
. Flip the NAV 1 frequency to the MAC VOR and reset the CDI.
The primary workload, aside from managing the aircraft systems, is now to monitor our progress. Rotate the CDU
mode selector to
DIS/TIME to see the distance (in nautical miles) and time (in minutes) to the next waypoint.
