4. Start by entering the altitude. You can left-click either the
2
or
8
key to begin entering the altitude. The
altitude is rounded to the nearest 1,000 feet and then divided by 1,000, so 6,000 feet would be entered
as 6, while 12,600 feet would be entered as 13. Note that the maximum altitude recognised by the INS is
15,000 feet or 15. Enter the required altitude and press
INSERT
.
5. To enter the VOR frequency, left-click either the
4
or
6
key and then enter the frequency without the
decimal point, for example 117.50MHz is 117500. Press
INSERT
to input the frequency.
Flying direct
To allow for changes to your route mid-flight, such as an instruction from ATC to fly direct to a waypoint further
along your route, the INS has a function which allows you to carry out a manual leg change.
Rotate the CDU data selector knob to the
DIS/TIME
position and then press the
WY PT CHG
key.
If you want to fly directly from your current position to a certain waypoint (e.g. waypoint 5), press the
0
key
and then press the numerical key which corresponds to the waypoint to which you wish to fly directly (
5
in this
example). Press the
INSERT
key to insert your input and then the aircraft will change heading to fly directly from
your current position to the selected waypoint.
If you want to fly directly from one waypoint to another (e.g. from waypoint
4
to
6
), press the numerical keys which
correspond to the waypoints that you wish to fly directly between (e.g. press
4
and then
6
). Press the
INSERT
key
to insert your input and the aircraft will change heading to fly directly between the two selected waypoints.
Aided inertial operation
The INS has two basic operating modes during flight: ‘Aided Inertial Operation’ and ‘Unaided Inertial Operation’.
Aided Inertial Operation is the most commonly used mode.
Aided Inertial Operation combines two or more INS systems along with existing VOR/DME ground stations
to maintain an API below 4. To configure the INS for Aided Inertial Operation prior to departing the gate, the
following procedure is used:
Ensure that all INS mode selectors are set to
NAV
mode and have an API of 4 or lower. Ideally, your API at the
gate should be 0 if you have had sufficient time for a full alignment.
1. On INS 1, rotate the data selector to
DSRTK/STS
.
2. Press the number
4
key and then press the
INSERT
key.
3. Rotate the Waypoint/DME selector to the required DME station number, i.e. if the VOR is at waypoint 5,
rotate the wheel to 5.
4. Rotate the data selector to
DIS/TIME
.
5. Right-click on the
9
key and then left-click on the
7
key. This displays the current distance to the VOR.
Confirm that the distance is correct according to your flight plan and/or the DME indicator.
6. Press the
WY PT CHG
key. Both it and the INSERT key should illuminate, and the FROM/TO display
should show a flashing ‘0’. Use the keypad to enter the number of the VOR waypoint, e.g. 5.
7. Press the
INSERT
key to complete the process and then repeat for INS 2.
