Magnetic indicators
The fuel panel is fitted with magnetic indicators showing the position of valves. These have two states:
• In-line – fully open
• Cross-line – fully closed
Contents gauges
The fuel panel is fitted with contents gauges for each of the tanks. These display the quantity of fuel in each tank
in kilograms x 1,000.
Each contents gauge is equipped with a press-to-test button.
Pumps
Each main tank has two electrically driven pumps:
• Forward – used for engine fuel feed
• Aft – used for engine fuel feed and fuel transfer/dumping
The engine-driven LP pump can draw fuel from the tank in the event of both booster pumps failing.
Low fuel pressure at an engine LP pump triggers the associated LOW PRESS red warning light to illuminate.
When the booster pump switches are set to ON, fuel from the main tanks is delivered to the engines. Failure of
both booster pumps in a tank causes the associated LOW PRESS red warning light to illuminate.
Fuel supply to the engine can be maintained at altitudes of up to approximately 28,000ft by the engine LP pump.
LP cocks
The electrically driven LP cocks allow the associated engine feed to be isolated in the case of engine fire or a fuel
leak.
The LP cocks are controlled by two-position toggle switches with associated magnetic indicators. Electrical
power for the LP cocks comes from 28-volt essential DC.
The LP cocks open when the corresponding switch is selected OPEN, provided the HP cock is away from the
SHUT position. They shut automatically when the fire drill is carried out as the HP cock is selected SHUT and the
fire handle is pulled.
With the HP cock selected SHUT and the LP cock selected OPEN, the LP cock magnetic indicator will indicate
cross-hatch.
Inter-engine and crossfeed valve control
To the rear of the centre tank and upstream of the LP cocks, the inter-engine crossfeed pipe interconnects all
four main feed pipes to the engines.
Electrically operated inter-engine valves connect the feed pipes to No.1/2 and No.3/4 engines. A crossfeed valve
is fitted in the pipe joining the left and right systems.
Inter-engine and crossfeed valve magnetic indicators indicate the position of their associated valves.
Selecting an inter-engine valve switch to open allows the booster pumps in one tank to supply fuel to both
engines on that side of the aircraft if the pumps on the other tank are selected off.
Selecting the crossfeed valve switch to open with the inter-engine valves already open allows all engines to be fed
from a particular tank, or any combination of tanks, depending on which booster pump switches are selected on.
