Flight Engineer’s station – engine start panel
One of the curiosities of the VC10 is the inclusion of
the engine start and throttle controls on the Flight
Engineer’s workstation. This provided the Engineer
with greater and more precise control over power
settings and engine management.
1. Igniter operation lights – illuminate when the
following conditions are met:
• Batteries ON
• Start master selector knob in LP START
position
• Engine start switch in START or RELIGHT
position
The selected engine will attempt to start when
IGN 2 has illuminated.
2. LP shaft rotation light – illuminates when the
following conditions are met:
• Batteries ON
• Start master selector knob in LP START
position
• Engine start switch in START position and
engine LP rotation detected
3. Intercom/R/T switch and intercom socket (non-
functional in this simulation)
4. Throttle levers
5. Aft freight hold door indicator
6. Aft passenger entrance door indicator
7. Forward passenger entrance door indicator
8. Forward freight hold door indicator
9. Forward service door indicator
10. Aft service door indicator
11. Forward access panel indicator
12. Aft freight hold ventral hatch indicator
13. Doors warning indicator test switch
14. Equipment bay access panel indicator
15. Water filling and ground conditioning access
panel indicator
16. Cabin freight door indicator
17. Cabin freight door circuit arming indicator
18. Ground crew call reset button
19. Panel lights switch
20. Ground crew call button
21. Plastic cover for starting panel
22. Engine start master selector knob – right-click
to rotate clockwise, left-click to rotate anti-
clockwise
23. Engine start switches – left-click to move switch
up to select START or right-click to move switch
down to select RELIGHT
24. Starter on light – illuminates when the following
conditions are met:
• Batteries ON
• Start master selector knob in a position other
than ALL OFF
• Engine start switch in START position
‘Voice-controlled autothrottle’
During one long flight, the crew found themselves entertaining visitors in the cockpit (it was the 1960s after
all). One visitor was admiring the cockpit while the Captain informed her about all the modern technology
on board, including voice-controlled throttles. Instructing the passenger to watch the throttles, he called
out, “Close throttle No. 1”. The passenger looked on in amazement as the throttle did just as instructed,
and again as the Captain commanded the throttle to full power. Her amazement was somewhat short-
lived, however, when she spotted the FE moving his set of throttles after the Captain had commanded
them to move. The chuckling in the cockpit may have been a bit of a giveaway as well!
