VC10 Professional – Operations Manual
77
It’s a long route but we only need to input the first nine waypoints at this stage because the INS can only handle
nine waypoints at a time.
To load up the VC10 Professional INS tutorial flight, follow these steps:
1. Start Prepar3D, Flight Simulator X or FSX: Steam Edition.
2. If you are using FSX, select the
Free Flight
menu.
3. Choose
Load
.
4. Select
Just Flight VC10 Professional Tutorial 2
from the list of saved flights.
5. Click on
OK
(Prepar3D) or
Fly Now!
(Flight Simulator X).
You should now find yourself sitting in the cockpit at Glasgow’s Prestwick Airport. For this tutorial it is assumed
that you have completed the first tutorial and know how to pre-flight the aircraft. This tutorial will focus on the
operation of the INS.
To configure the aircraft in a cold and dark state, select the ‘Cold & Dark’ panel state from the VC10 Professional
menu.
Pre-flight
To access the INS, press
[Shift]+[2]
to bring up INS 1 and
[Shift]+[3]
to bring up INS 2. Move the INS 2 panel to
the right of INS 1 so we can see them both.
Our first job is to power up both systems. To do this we need to move the MSU mode control knob to the
STBY
(standby) position. This will power up the system, starting the gyros spinning.
Despite being in standby mode, we can now begin entering data into the system. Let’s start with our position.
Since we’re at the gate, we can get our exact position via a chart or by pressing [Shift]+[Z] on the keyboard to
bring up our position data on the top left of the screen. Our current position is N5530.5, W00436.6.
To enter this into the INS we need to set both INS panels to
POS
using the mode selector on the CDU. Next,
push the
REMOTE
button on both CDUs. This will allow us to enter data into both systems at the same time.
Finally, ensure the AUTO/MAN switch is set to
AUTO
on both CDUs.
To enter our position, we first need to push the number 2 key on the INS. This tells the system we want to input
a northern latitude. If we were south of the equator we’d press the number 8 button. Enter
55305
and then press
the illuminated
INSERT
key. The left-hand display should now show the latitude we entered and this should be
shown on both systems.
