Chapter 2. Planning Your Installation
This chapter provides information about planning your 7299 family installation and
checking your cabling.
Laying Out Your Installation
To determine the layout of your new or existing fiber optic cabling or twisted-pair
wiring and to determine the cable run-lengths that are required, use your building
floor plan and wiring schedule. On the floor plan, mark the location of the host
system, the devices, and the wiring closet.
Note: Operating the network with non-specified wiring, jacks, plugs, connecting
blocks, or cable run-lengths might be unsatisfactory and is not recommended or
supported.
You must determine:
Ÿ
The location of the host systems and which devices should attach to each host
system
Ÿ
The location and number of Multiplexers and Hubs
Ÿ
The method of attachment to the host system
Ÿ
The number of devices that each 7299 will serve
Ÿ
The location of all the 7299s
Ÿ
The cabling scheme between the components of the cabling system, including
the type of connection, pins, and phase (or polarity) How you want to distribute
WSC ports and addresses. See “Filling Out the 7299 Multiplexer Worksheet”
on page 2-2.
Cable Run Lengths
Referring to your wiring schedule, mark the actual wire paths on your floor plan.
Use this marked-up floor plan to help determine the cable lengths required. When
determining cable lengths, include the following measurements:

The distance from the 7299 to the floor
Ÿ
If you have a raised floor, the length from the raised floor to the subfloor
underneath
Ÿ
The distance across the floor to the device
Ÿ
The distance from the floor to the device
When determining cable lengths, make sure you do not exceed the maximum cable
lengths for your configuration.
