Using 6299 Multiplexers
The 7299 Hub twinax connection is compatible with 6299 multiplexers. The 7299
Multiplexer fiber optic connection is not compatible with 6299 Multiplexers. All
devices that are connected to the host through 6299 multiplexers operate at
1 Mbps mode, because the multiplexers do not support 2 Mbps mode.
One multiplexer (MUX) combines multiple signals and sends them over one link,
and the other multiplexer (DEMUX) receives the combined signal and separates it.
6299 Multiplexers are always used in pairs. 6299 Multiplexers can send and
receive signals through UTP, twinax, or fiber optic cabling.
For more information about 6299 multiplexers, see
IBM 6299 Midrange Hub
Planning, Installation, and Maintenance Guide.
Connecting Devices to the Hub
You connect devices to the hub using UTP or FTP cabling and baluns.
The IBM 7299 Express Hub for AS/400 supports the Electronic Industries
Association/Telecommunication Industry Association (EIA/TIA) Category 5 STP
(referred to in this book as FTP cable) or UTP cable. For standards information,
see “Cabling Standards” on page 6-2.
For information about baluns see:
The general information in “Baluns” on page 2-18
The standards in “Balun Standards” on page 6-7
The ordering information in Chapter 7, “Parts List”
Connecting the Multiplexer to the Host
You can connect the 7299 Multiplexer to the host direct by:
Using the WSC to 7299 Multiplexer cable (p/n 05J4550)
Using baluns attached to a twinax breakout box
Using a remote control unit
Jumpers inside the 7299 Multiplexer must be properly set to use either the DB25
direct connect on the rear of the Multiplexer or the RJ45 connectors on the front.
Any number of ports may be set for DB25 direct connect. Jumpers cannot be set
to use both DB25 and RJ45 at the same time.
If the RJ45 connectors are used, the jumpers must be set to the wiring pair used in
your installation. The Multiplexer ships with jumpers set for RJ45 connectors and
pins 4 and 5 active. To use the DB25 connector or a pair other than pins 4 and 5,
the jumpers must be changed.
