To install a balun, attach the twinax baluns as you would attach a twinax cable:
Before screwing down the connector, line up the alignment pin.
Turn only the connector’s outer ring, not the balun itself.
When removing a balun, turn only the connector’s outer ring.
Installing the 7299 Hub
Important
Before installing the 7299, read the
Safety Information booklet that was
provided with the product and Appendix B, “Notices” on page B-1.
To install the 7299:
1. Verify the pinout settings for host connectivity using the information in
Chapter 6, “Cables and Baluns.” If you need to change the pinouts or polarity
that the 7299 uses, see “Changing the Hub Polarity and Pinout Jumpers” on
page 3-3.
2. If you are installing a model 2EN, 2PA, 2EX, or 2FX, rack mount the hub.
Note: If you are installing a model 1PA, you can wall mount the hub using the
brackets that were provided with the hub. Mount the brackets on the wall, and
then slide the 7299 into place.
3. Connect each device to one of the RJ device jacks using straight-wired
twisted-pair cabling. For 2 Mbps mode, Category 5 cabling or better is
recommended.
The numbers on the front of the 7299 are device numbers. The device number
(connector number) does not correlate with the IBM device address that the
device uses. Any device can be connected to any of the RJ device connectors,
regardless of the device address that it uses.
Note: Each WSC port connection can support up to seven addresses.
Multiple-session devices can use an address for each session. If one device
jack is used to connect a device that uses seven addresses, the other six
device jacks cannot be used.
4. Attach the UTP cable from the workstation controller (WSC) port to the 7299.
5. In the white space above the RJ host connector, write the WSC and the port
number for the host connection.
6. Strain relief all the data cables firmly, but do not crush them. Keep the data
cables apart from the power cables.
7. If you are installing a model 2EN, 2EX or 2FX:
a. Verify that the power cords are firmly attached to the back of the 7299, as
shown in Figure 3-1 on page 3-3:
The cord from the AC power adapter should be firmly attached to the
DC power plug.
The AC power cord should be firmly attached to the AC power adapter.
