Chapter 6. Cables and Baluns

Note: For information about maximum cable lengths, see “Maximum Cable
Lengths” on page 2-8.

The IBM 7299 Express Products for AS/400 uses unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) or
foiled twisted-pair (FTP, model 2FX only) cable for connectivity.

Twisted-pair cable is easily obtainable, is more flexible, and is less expensive to
install and maintain than twinax cable. For data communications, twisted-pair cable
is generally configured with 4 pairs of wires (large, multi-pair trunk cables are not
recommended).

The IBM 7299 Express Products for AS/400 can use UTP or FTP cabling. The
cables and their associated connectors are shown in Figure 6-1.
