Spark Plug
(Refer to “Maintenance Precautions” on page 60.)
Recommended spark plug:
(NGK) CPR8EA-9
(NGK) CPR9EA-9 (Optional)
1. Disconnect the spark plug cap (1).
2. Clean any dirt from around the spark plug base.
Remove the spark plug using the plug wrench (2)
furnished in the tool kit.
3. Inspect the electrodes and insulator for deposits,
erosion or carbon fouling. If the erosion or deposit is
heavy, replace the plug. Clean a carbon or wet
fouled plug with a plug cleaner or use a wire brush.
5. Check that the seal washer is in good condition.
Install the spark plug in by hand to prevent cross-
threading until it touches the cylinder head.
6. If the spark plug is in good condition, reinstall it.
Tighten the used plug 1/8 turn after it seats. If a
new spark plug is installed, tighten it in two steps to
prevent it from loosening:
a) First tighten it 1/2 turn after it seats.
b) Then loosen it.
c) Finally tighten it 1/8 turn after it seats.
7. Reinstall the spark plug cap.
4. Check the spark plug gap (3) using a wire type
feeler gauge. If adjustment is necessary, bend the
side electrode (4) carefully.
Specified gap: 0.8 – 0.9 mm (0.03 – 0.04 in)

The spark plug must be securely tightened. An
improperly tightened plug can become very hot and
possibly damage the engine.

Never use a spark plug with an improper heat
range. Severe engine damage could result.
