Connecting to the Ethernet network
fail-over mode and one of the interfaces experiences a failure, the remaining interface takes over the
Ethernet traffic of the failed interface in addition to its own packets. Take note of the following:
• If both interfaces in a fail-over pair are up, you will get two interfaces worth of incoming and outgoing
bandwidth.
• Once a fail-over has occurred, the total bandwidth (both the incoming and outgoing bandwidth) is
limited to one interface worth of packets.
• Spectrum servers do not ship with Ethernet interfaces configured for fail-over. Interface fail-over must
be configured using SystemManager.
• You can assign multiple Ethernet interfaces on your Spectrum server to the same IP subnet. You
can use the interfaces independently and the maximum bandwidth will be limited by the number of
interfaces.
• To maximize bandwidth, you must connect to the Spectrum server in such a way that each client PC
points to a different interface on the Spectrum video server. Please be aware that if multiple client PCs
are connected to each of the different Ethernet interfaces on the Spectrum server, then bandwidth can
be distributed across the different interfaces. If the client PCs are all connected to a single interface,
bandwidth is limited by that one interface.
• If you initiate a file transfer from a given Ethernet interface on a client PC to a specific interface on
the Spectrum video server, it will always use the same interface to return packets, and will send them
directly to the same interface on the client PC that initiated the transfer.
For more details and configuration instructions, refer to "Configuring Network Settings" in the

Connecting to the SystemManager
If you are using SystemManager, connect your Spectrum video server to the SystemManager platform or
the software-only version of the SystemManager on a client PC.
Before you begin
If you are using SystemManager, refer to the
Harmonic SystemManager Installation Guide
for instructions
on installing the SystemManager platform or installing the software-only version of SystemManager on a
client PC.
After installing the SystemManager, follow the connection instructions for the Spectrum video server.
Once you have connected to the SystemManager, power on the SystemManager and log in. Refer to the
Harmonic SystemManager User Guide
for login instructions.
Note that Spectrum X can be operated and configured using the SystemManager or the Spectrum
Management application that runs on the Spectrum X.
Connecting a MediaDirector or a MediaCenter to SystemManager
Connect the MediaDirector or the MediaCenter to the SystemManager to begin monitoring the Spectrum
system.
IMPORTANT:
For the following connections, use only a CAT 6 Ethernet cable or better.
For lengths between 37m and 100m, or greater, use CAT 6a.
