Chapter 9: MediaStore 5100 and 5000 series hardware reference
Dealing with hardware faults
Be sure to take certain precautions when dealing with hardware faults.
Before you begin
DANGER:
If a MediaStore is powered up and you remove any module, replace it
immediately. If the MediaStore is used with modules or module blanks missing for more
than a few minutes, the MediaStore can overheat, causing power failure and data loss.
Such use will invalidate the warranty.
• Ensure that you have obtained a replacement module of the same type before removing any faulty
module. For more information on replacing modules, refer to the
Spectrum MediaStore Component
Replacement Guide
.
• Replace a faulty drive with a drive of the same type and capacity. For more information on replacing
drives, refer to the
Spectrum MediaStore Component Replacement Guide
.
• All drive bays must be fitted with a Drive Carrier module or a dummy carrier module in order to
maintain a balanced airflow.
• All the supplied plug-in power supply units, electronics modules and blank modules must be in place
for the air to flow correctly around the cabinet.
Continuous operation during replacement
Depending on how the MediaStore is set up, if a disk unit fails, it can normally be replaced without
interrupting the use of the system.
In addition, each MediaStore contains two Power Cooling Modules (PCMs), either of which can maintain
power and cooling to the MediaStore while the other is replaced.
MediaStore auto start failure
Unless otherwise selected at installation time, all drives in the MediaStore will automatically start their
motors after power is applied.
If the MediaStore does not automatically start, there is a power problem. An alarm and power fault
indication will normally be active.
NOTE:
The
System Fault LED
on the Operators Panel will blink Green /Amber.
The
Drive Activity LED
may be off for a length of time during power up.
Audible alarm states
The MediaStore includes an
Audible Alarm
on the
Operator Panel
that indicates when a fault state is
present.
The following conditions will activate the alarm:
• PCM Faults
• Fan Fault
• Temperature Alerts
• System faults
When the Audible Alarm sounds, pressing the
Alarm Silence Button
may mute it. If the Alarm Silence
Button is not manually operated, the alarm will automatically mute after two minutes. When the alarm is
