Thermal condition that could
cause PCM overheating
Disconnect the PCM from the main
power. Remove and then re-install
the PCM. If the problem persists,
replace the PCM.
Refer to the
Spectrum MediaStore
Component Replacement Guide
for instructions on removing and re-
installing the PCM.

Troubleshooting thermal monitoring and control faults
The MediaStore 5100and 5000 series use extensive thermal monitoring, and take a number of actions to
ensure that component temperatures are kept low and acoustic noise is minimized.
Air flows from the front to the rear of the MediaStore. In some cases, you may need to take steps to
ensure proper thermal control.
Symptom
: If the ambient air temperature is below 25°C, and the fans have increased in speed, then
some airflow restriction may be causing an increase in the internal temperature.
NOTE:
This is not a fault condition.
Cause
: The first stage in the thermal control process is for the fans to automatically increase in speed
when a thermal threshold is reached. This may be caused by higher ambient temperatures in the local
environment and may be perfectly normal.
NOTE:
This threshold changes according to the number of drives and power supplies
fitted.
Action
:
• Check the installation for any airflow restrictions at either the front or rear of the MediaStore. A
minimum gap of 25 mm at the front and 50 mm at the rear is recommended.
• Check for restrictions due to dust build-up. Clean as appropriate.
• Check for excessive re-circulation of heated air from the rear to the front. Use of the MediaStore in a
fully enclosed rack is not recommended.
• Check that all blank modules are in place.
• Reduce the ambient temperature.
Troubleshooting thermal alarm faults
In the case of thermal alarm faults, you may need to take steps to maintain a proper thermal state.
Symptom
: A thermal alarm will sound. The Operator Panel Module Fault displays amber and/or the Fan
Fail LED is lit on one or more PCMs.
Cause
: The internal temperature exceeds a pre-set threshold.
