Pressure Compensator Cartridge Description
The cartridge is a pressure compensating element,
used with a variable orifice to yield a three port (by-
pass type) pressure compensated, flow regulating
hydraulic valve (see cartridge details below).

Setting Trenching Valve
If trenching power is lost to the drive wheels, the
trenching valve may need adjusting as follows:
1. Check that the main relief valve pressure is correct
(as per page 52).
2. Attach trencher to loader and connect hose into
auxiliary hoses.
3. Set engine rpm to full speed.
4. Without putting trencher into the ground run
trencher chain in correct direction for digging (push
auxiliary lever down). Note engine sound. Engine
should be running freely.
5. Run trencher in reverse (lift auxiliary lever). The
engine should sound like it is under load.
6. If the engine runs freely with trencher in reverse,
adjustments to trenching valve is necessary. This is
done by adjusting screw (5) on trenching valve.
Screw adjustment in (clockwise) to increase load
on engine.
Screw adjustment out (counterclockwise) to unload
engine.
Correct setting is that when trencher chain is
running in reverse, with the chain still running and
the engine sound should indicate it is under load.
Summary
With trencher running above ground it should:
• Engine should run freely with trencher running in
forward (cutting) direction.
• Engine should be under load with trencher in
reverse.
• If the trencher is still not performing properly follow
the set-up procedure.
Trencher Manifold Set-Up Procedure
This procedure is carried out with the engine at
operating rpm. With a pressure gage on the test point
at the pump, set the back pressure valve on the tank
port of the directional control valve to 440 psi. Speed
adjustment needle valve is turned clockwise and
closed.
1. Adjust Sequence Valve 7. This cartridge is located
at bottom near the speed adjustment valve and is
silver in color. Loosen the lock nut and turn the
allen screw adjustment clockwise until it reaches its
stop. Now turn the allen screw adjustment
counterclockwise 1/8 turn and tighten the lock nut.
2. Adjust the Holding Valve 2. This cartridge is one of
the two cartridges located on the top of the
manifold and is gold in color. Loosen the lock cap,
being careful not to loosen the copper sealing
washer. Turn the allen screw adjustment
counterclockwise until no load is felt on the allen
screw adjuster. With the trencher motor running in
the forward (cutting) direction, turn the allen screw
clockwise until a pressure of 800-1000 psi is
obtained. Tighten the lock nut.
