Figure 8-5. Fiber Identification Setup.
Using the TURBOTEST 500B with Optical Fiber Identifiers
The TURBOTEST 500B is designed to generate the 2 kHz [TONE] signal for use with Optical Fiber
Identifiers to isolate specific fibers from a bundle. In the following procedures the Noyes OFI 200 Optical
Fiber Identifier is used to detect the modulated tone from the TURBOTEST 500B. This application is
commonly referred to as "toning out the fiber".
Tone Setup
1 Attach the APC connector on the reference cable to the Test Port.
2 Attach the other end of the reference cable to the fiber to be traced.
3 From the OPM test screen, press the [MENU] key to access the [OPM MAIN MENU] screen.
4 Use either [UP] or [DOWN] arrow key to highlight the [OTHER FUNCTIONS] option, then press the
[SELECT] soft key to access the [OTHER FUNCTIONS] screen.
5 Choose the [POWER ADJUST] option, and then press the [SELECT] soft key to display the [POWER
ADJUSTMENT] screen.
6 Press the [
λ]
soft key to select the desired laser to modulate the 2 kHz [TONE] signal.
7 Press the [OFF/ ON/ 270/ 1 K/ 2 K] soft key to display the [2 K] tone option.
8 The operator at the far end or cut-over point is now able to begin searching for the fiber with a 2 kHz
tone using an Optical Fiber Identifier.
