Figure 6-2. Self Referencing.
OLTS - Insertion Loss Reference
[INSERTION LOSS] referencing allows you to reference the laser output for accurate loss measurement of
a fiber link. Two methods are available for setting an insertion loss reference: [SELF] or [MUTUAL].
Note:
[MUTUAL] referencing is available for eliminating variations due to connector tolerance when
self-referencing. Either referencing method may be selected for performing an insertion loss reference
setup.
SELF Referencing
Clean all fiber optic connectors and optical ports before performing test procedures described below.
Refer to Figure 6-2 for a related Illustration.
1 On entry to the [OLTS REFERENCE] screen, the [INSERTION LOSS] screen is highlighted by default.
Press the [SELECT] soft key to access the [INSERTION LOSS REFERENCE] sub-screen.
2 Using either [UP] or [DOWN] arrow key highlight the [SELF] option.
3 Press the [SELECT] soft key to access the [LOOP BACK TO OPM PORT] screen.
4 Attach the APC connector on the reference cable to the Test Port.
5 Attach the UPC connector on the reference cable to the OPM Port.
6 Press the [
λ]
to select the desired wavelength to be referenced (refer to Section titled “Selecting
Test Wavelength”, page 23).
7 When the desired wavelengths are selected, press the [Back] key to return to the
[LOOP BACK TO OPM PORT] screen.
8 From the [LOOP BACK TO OPM PORT] screen, press the [START] soft key to begin the verification.
Once the display reads [REFS VERIFIED] followed by a beep (if the beeper function is enabled), then
the reference is set.
Note:
If the display reads
[NOT VERIFIED], clean all
fiber optic connectors again
and check for excessive fiber
bends, be sure laser output
is properly set. Perform the
required procedures over.
