Checklist
For your own safety, carry out the following
tasks in the
specified
order
→
:
1. Find a
firm
and level surface suitable for
lifting
the vehicle.
2. Switch
off
the engine. Select a gear on
vehicles with a manual gearbox or
move the selector lever to position P on
vehicles with an automatic gearbox and
switch on the electric parking brake.
3. Chock the wheel diagonally opposite
using the collapsible chocks or other
suitable objects.
4. When towing a trailer
→
hitch the trailer from the vehicle and
park it properly.
5. Loosen the wheel bolts
→
page 353.
6. Find the jacking point under the vehicle
→
which is closest to the wheel
that is being changed.
7. Insert the crank into the opening on the
jack (depends on the vehicle equip-
ment).
8. Raise the jack until it just
fits
under the
jacking point of the vehicle.
9. Make sure that the entire surface of the
foot of the jack is resting securely on
the ground and that it is positioned ver-
tically directly beneath the jacking point

10. Position the jack and simultaneously
continue to crank the claw up until it is
in position around the vertical rib under-
neath the vehicle
→
11. Crank the jack further until the wheel is
just clear of the ground.
WARNING
Incorrect use of the vehicle jack can cause
the vehicle to slip
off
the jack, which can
lead to severe injuries. Please note the
following to help reduce the risk of inju-
ries:
·
Never jack up the vehicle if more than
one tyre is damaged.
·
Always read and observe the instruc-
tions of the jack manufacturer and any
legal regulations before
lifting
the vehi-
cle.
·
Never jack up the vehicle when the en-
gine is running, or if the vehicle is tilted
to the side or on a gradient.
·
Never start the engine when the vehicle
is jacked up. Engine vibrations can
cause the vehicle to fall
off
the vehicle
jack.
·
Fit the jack only at the described jacking
points. The jack claw must grip the ver-
tical rib under the door sill securely.
