Additional HSI annotations are as follows:
• Lateral deviation – Lateral deviation in-
formation is displayed in the center of
the heading compass. The lateral course
deviation indicator (CDI) and scale in-
dicate course deviation. This scale also
indicates invalid lateral deviation when
a red X appears on top of it. The center
of the deviation scale is the fixed wing air-
craft symbol and has two dots, evenly
spaced to the left and right of the lubber
line. The scale is displayed for both the
HSI display and the partial ARC display,
but not when a MAP presentation is il-
lustrated. When the MAP mode is se-
lected and a flight plan is displayed, a
digital course deviation (left or right of
course in nautical miles) is displayed
below the airplane symbol. The course
pointer represents a "fly to" presentation.
The color of the display is dependent on
several source options and will be in ac-
cordance with the colors listed in Table
16-4.
• Range – A range ring will appear on the
MAP display all of the time, and on the
ARC display when WX is selected for
display. The range ring is halfway be-
tween the airplane symbol and the com-
pass arc and is labeled with one-half of
the selected range. The range is selected
on the WX radar control panel even if WX
is not being displayed. If the radar is
OFF, the MAP and ARC range defaults
to 100 NM.
• To/From indicator – This indicator is dis-
played near the head or tail of the lateral
deviation bar. The triangle indicates
whether the selected course will take the
airplane to or from a VOR station. When
the selected navigation source is LOC or
ILS or the signal is invalid, the triangle
is removed from the display.
• Course select/Desired track – Course
select information is pilot selectable and
displayed when the selected navigation
source is VOR/LOC/ILS. The course is in-
dependently selectable on the pilot and
copilot sides using the two course set
knobs (CRS 1 and CRS 2) on the flight
guidance controller panel. Desired track
information is displayed when the se-
lected navigation source is FMS and is not
pilot selectable with the course set knobs.
The course select (CRS) and desired track
(DTK) are displayed as a digital readout,
to the left of the compass (HSI, ARC and
MAP format), and as a pointer within the
compass display, as illustrated in Figures
16-31, 16-32 and 16-33.
• Drift bug – The drift bug is a cyan tri-
a n g u l a r bu g t h a t r o t a t e s a r o u n d t h e
perimeter of the HSI, ARC and MAP dis-
plays. The drift bug position is provided
by the FMS and indicates in degrees the
amount of drift the airplane is experi-
encing. This bug remains in view all the
time, regardless of HSI format (HSI, ARC
or MAP) and regardless of the navigation
source.
• Bearing pointers – Bearing information
is selectable on the PFDs through two
pointers displayed on the heading com-
pass. The #1 and #2 pointers are displayed
as in Figure 16-31, and represent the rel-
ative bearing to sources selected on the
pilot's display controller. For invalid bear-
ing information, or when the compass
display includes a map presentation, both
pointers will be removed from the PFD.
Distance Annunciation
A distance display is presented on the PFD for-
mat to the left of the heading compass. This
display shows the distance to a navigation
source station for VOR/LOC modes, and the
distance to the “TO” waypoint in the FMS
mode. The digital distance readout will be
displayed with a "NM" following the numer-
ical value. When DME hold is selected on the
RMU, the NM is replaced with an amber "H"
annunciation. See Table 16-4 for color coding
of the distance readout.
