Shielding and insulating parts
The O-Scan M.R. unit can detect very-low-intensity RF waves emitted by
the spins contained in the sample under examination - such as a knee.
Since many signals of the same kind and of higher intensity are in the air,
it is necessary to shield both the anatomic region under examination and
the coil which receives the signals emitted by the aforementioned spins.
This is why the gantry must be properly shielded.
In some cases additional shielding of the patient's limb is required. For
this purpose O-Scan is equipped with a pair of shielding covers, one to
shield the front part of the limb examined and the other to shield the rear
part, and a pair of aluminum straps to increase the contact surface
between the cover and limb examined.
These enable earthing of the limb, and in particular connection to the
shielding provided with the gantry.
To check whether the shielding covers and straps are required, run a
Scout sequence (see chapter “Examination environment”).
An insulating strap is also available to avoid contact of the skin with the
gantry in the case of large patients.
N o t e
During Scout acquisition, if no error message indicating the presence
of interference and/or noise upon acquisition is displayed and if the
acquired scout images are free of interference and/or noise, the
examination can be performed without the shielding covers and
straps. Otherwise these elements are required.
