Link Access Procedure for
Modems (LAPM)
An HDLC error correction protocol for use
with error-correcting modems. Part of the ITU-
T V.42 protocol.
Local computer
The computer the modem is attached to via the
serial port.
Local system
The modem and the computer it is attached to.
Microcom Networking Protocol
(MNP)
A data communications protocol that allows
error-free interactive communications with a
variety of computers or terminals over
ordinary voice-grade telephone lines.
Mode Indicator/Mode Indicator
Common (MI/MIC)
Allows the modem to be used with dial-back
security devices and Bell 801-type automatic
calling units.
MNP reliable link
Communications established with a remote
computer, using the Microcom Networking
Protocol to perform error checking and
correction.
Modem
MOdulator-DEModulator. A device that
permits a computer to communicate with other
computers or terminals over analog telephone
lines. The local modem converts digital input
from the local computer into analog signals,
which are then transmitted over the telephone
line. The remote modem on the other end of the
connection reconverts the analog signals into
digital signals, which are then transmitted to
the remote computer.
Modem port
Modem-to-remote system connection. The
port through which analog signals are
exchanged over the telephone line.
Multi-protocol auto-answer
The state in which the modem can auto-answer
incoming calls and establish a connection at
any speed from 28800 bps or lower. The
modem can connect using any of the following
modulation protocols: V.34, V.32bis, V.32,
V.22bis, V.22 (1200 bps only), V.21, V.23
split speed (1200 bps transmit/75 bps receive
only), V.23 half-duplex, Bell 212A, and Bell
103.
