Glossary
This glossary lists terms that relate to modem operations. The following table
describes each term.
Term
Definition
Adaptive Packet Assembly
The process by which MNP automatically
adjusts the size of data packets based on the
quality of the telephone line. When the line
quality is good and there are few
retransmissions, the size of the packets
increases. When the line quality is poor and
retransmissions are frequent, the size of the
packets decreases in order to maintain high
throughput.
Adverse Channel Enhancements
(ACE)
Optimizes performance of the modem when
operating under poor line quality conditions.
Analog transmission
Transmission method by which data is sent as
a continuous range of changes in amplitude or
frequency. Standard telephone lines use analog
transmission.
Answer modem
The modem that emits answer tone at off hook.
Can only establish a connection with an
originating modem.
Answer tone
The tone an answering modem emits before
carrier is exchanged.
Asynchronous
Data communications using an asynchronous
computer. Data is usually sent using start/stop
bit protocol and 8 bits (the most significant bit
may be a parity bit).
AT Mode
The state that the modem is in when it is using
the Hayes AT command set.
