Spread Phase
This phase begins when the spread clamps take
the flatwork piece from the transfer clamps.
A signal from PX12 indicates the clamps
have reached their home position and
MPC1 de-energizes INV3.
MPC1 energizes SV16L and SV16R,
causing the spread clamps to close and
grip the flatwork.
At the same time, SV14 and SV15
are de-energized to open the transfer
clamps.
Now Motor 3 (upper spreader) is
energized via INV3, causing the spread
clamps to move toward their respective
endframes.
As the piece spreads, the taut sensors
(PE14A/B) briefly detect the corner/
edges of the item. At this point, both
sensors must see the piece at the same
time; otherwise, an error condition is
assumed and the piece is dropped.
In addition, the MPC1 board must
receive a signal from PX9, indicating
that the upper spreader belt is in motion.
If it fails to receive the signal, an error
condition is assumed. The machine
stops and displays the appropriate error
message in the CHI Panel.
As the piece spreads, the MPC1 board
uses the size data calculated during
the Input Phase and the setting of the
SPREAD SLOW BUFFER to determine
when to slow the spread speed.
As the piece spreads, its top edge rises
until it is detected by the taut sensors,
which causes the machine to slow the
spread process to its slowest speed.
When MPC1 stops receiving a signal
from PX9, it indicates that the piece has
been fully spread. INV3 is de-energized.

Large Piece Discharge Phase
This phase begins after the piece has
been spread. Several things occur id quick
succession
MPC1 triggers SV21, causing two finger
bars to emerge from air cylinders and
very briefly help hold the upper edge
of the flatwork against the air foil to
provide for improved laydown.
Almost immediately SVL22 and SVR22
are programmatically triggered so the air
blast bars to push the flatwork onto the
top of the vacuum box.
Based on CHI Panel settings, SOL16L,
SOL 16R, and SV21 are de-energized at
nearly the same time, causing the fingers
to retract and spread clamps to open,
based on CHI Panel settings.
The vacuum blower gates open
immediately and based on CHI Panel
settings remain open for a specified
length of time.
At a specified distance from the
laydown, MPC1 triggers SOL32 to
provide the assist air blast a little over
halfway down the discharge conveyor.
CHI Panel settings control when MPC1
signals SOL35 when is triggered to
open and close the end brush to provide
additional smoothing as the piece
transitions from the spreader/feeder to
the ironer.
Processing of the next piece is controlled
by CHI Panel settings to determine the
gap between processed pieces. This
helps to adjust the unit for maximum
productivity.
