Elevators
The elevators (
Figures 5E-3
and
5E-
4
) on the trailing edge of the horizontal
stabilizer provide pitch control of the
aircraft. The elevators are controlled
by two sources, either manually with
the control columns or electrically
with the autopilot servo.
Movement of the control wheel fore
or aft moves the elevators mechani-
cally. To move the control surfaces,
the elevator system uses a bellcrank
assembly in the aft section of the tail-
cone, a sector assembly below the
flight compartment floor, a column
control assembly, and cable assem-
blies. Movement of the control col-
umn is transmitted through the sector
assembly and bellcrank assembly via
the cable assemblies. A four-cable,
direct connect assembly from the
control column to the tail section
drives the elevators through a range
of 20 ± 1° up and 15 ± 1° down.
The autopilot elevator servo cables
apply force on the elevator cables to
reposition the elevator bellcrank; this
deflects the elevator. The elevator
cable assemblies contain cable clevis
fittings that provide attachment points
for the autopilot elevator servo cables.
The autopilot servo includes an over-
ride function that allows the crew to
physically overpower the servo by
manually moving the control column.
An amber AP PTCH MISTRIM light
advises when the autopilot is in an out
of- trim condition and that a sustained
trim input is being applied to the ele-
vator servo (for a detailed description
of the autopilot, see Avionics chapter).
Manual Pitch Trim
A pitch trim tab on both elevators
allows for minor adjustments to the
elevator (
Figure 5E-4
). The tabs pro-
vide a balanced and stable condition of
flight. A manual elevator trim wheel
(
Figure 5E-5
) on the center pedestal
transmits directional information to the
tab(s). The system uses cable assem-
blies to transmit the information to the
elevator trim tab actuator(s). Rotation
of the actuator screw(s) deflects the
trim tab(s). Full range of travel of the
tabs is 7 ± 1° up and 8 ± 1° down.
A mechanical pointer driven by the
trim wheel on the center pedestal
indicates NOSE UP or NOSE
DOWN trim. A takeoff (TO) range
marker indicates the proper trim
range for takeoff.
