Battery Overheat Warning
The battery overheat warning system
provides the pilot with an indication if
a battery overheat condition and
impending damage to the system. The
system consists of a temperature sen-
sor, temperature module, temperature
meter, and a BATT O'TEMP/>160°F
(71°C) annunciator light on the annun-
ciator panel. The sensor measures the
temperature of the cells at the center of
the battery. The temperature meter pro-
vides an additional battery temperature
monitoring system from 0 to 160°F.
The BATT O'TEMP/>160°F annunci-
ator light is split horizontally with the
upper half reading BATT O'TEMP and
the lower half reading >160°F.
If battery temperature reaches 145 to
160°F (63 to 71°C), the temperature
module illuminates the red BATT
O'TEMP annunciator. However, if bat-
tery temperature exceeds 160°F
(71°C), the >160°F annunciator begins
flashing at approximately two times
per second along with the BATT
O'TEMP annunciator light. Addition-
ally, the MASTER WARNING
RESET light illuminates, which can
be extinguished by pressing the MAS-
TER WARNING RESET switch.
After the BATT O'TEMP annuncia-
tor illuminates, remove and recondi-
tion the battery per the aircraft
Maintenance Manual.
Selecting BATT TEMP on the rotary
TEST switch tests the battery over-
heat warning system by simulating a
160°F (or over) battery temperature
condition and causes a flashing light.
The flashing annunciator indicates
system integrity and proper opera-
tion of the circuits. This test also
drives the battery temperature gauge
to 160°F.

In addition to the BATT O'TEMP
annunciator, a temperature gauge on
the right meter panel provides a con-
tinuous indication of battery temper-
ature
(Figure 5C-9)
. The range is 0
to 180°F with a yellow band from
145 to 160°F and a red band from
160 to 180°F. The gauge operates on
28V DC and uses a second tempera-
ture sensor between the battery cells
for its reading.
Ground Power
Where available, a Ground Power
Unit (GPU) can provide power for
system operation, engine starting,
and battery charging.
A GPU connects to the aircraft
through the receptacle on the left side
of the fuselage below the engine
nacelle
(Figure 5C-10).
The aircraft
requires a GPU capable of producing
