STARTER MOTOR

Disassemble Starter Motor

IMPORTANT: DO NOT clamp motor housing in a vise
or strike with a steel hammer. Starter motors contain
two ceramic magnets which can be broken or cracked
if the motor housing is hit, deformed or dented.

NOTE: For ease of re-assembly, mark starter

housing and end caps before disassembly.

See Fig. 24 for typical starter shown as an exploded
view.

1.

Remove starter drive.

2.

Remove thru bolts. Drive end head assembly can
now be removed.

3.

Inspect bushing for wear or damage. Replace if
worn or damaged.

4.

Hold the armature and commutator end cap
against a work surface while sliding housing off the
armature, Fig. 25. 

NOTE: This allows the armature to remain in the

end cap for inspection of brush contact to
the commutator.

5. Remove end cap and brush retainer with brushes.
Replace end cap if bushing is worn or damaged.
