In some instances the console operator may also be performing talent
whose voice will be heard over the radio. The operator’s microphone may
thus provide a part of the signal that is going out over the air. If that signal is
the one being monitored with the Control Room speakers, there is the
potential for feedback. The amplified signal from the Control Room speak-
ers is picked up by the microphone and reamplified to a new, higher, level,
which then is once again picked up by the microphone and . . . you get the
picture. The signal quickly rises to an ear-splitting screech. To prevent this,
the operator’s microphone is normally set to MUTE the Control Room output
to prevent the occurrence of feedback.
CR Select Button
The CR SELECT BUTTON lets the operator choose the source to be
listened to in the Control Room speakers. The source can be any signal
appearing at a console input connector (except the producer talkback input),
any of the four main buses, either of the caller feed mix-minus buses, or either
of the general purpose mix-minus buses.
Press the CR SELECT BUTTON. The button lights, the CHANNEL
DISPLAY shows “CR MON”, and the SOURCE DISPLAY shows the
signal currently feeding the Control Room output. The ENTER BUTTON
begins to flash. Turn the SELECT KNOB until the desired source shows in
the SOURCE DISPLAY, then press the ENTER BUTTON (the ENTER
BUTTON stops flashing). This selects the displayed source as the source for
the Control Room speakers. The source name also shows in the CR DIS-
PLAY, and the CR SELECT BUTTON light goes off. If an input is set up to
mute the Control Room, then the Control Room speakers will mute if that
input is selected as the Control Room monitor source.
Whenever the CR mute is activated, PGM may automatically be selected
as the Control Room source. In this case, PGM audio will be heard in the
headphones. The installer, however, may have disabled this feature.
If you don’t hit the ENTER BUTTON or move the SELECT KNOB for
ten seconds the select process will terminate, leaving the selection for the
phone section unchanged.
CR Display
The four character CR DISPLAY shows the source that is selected for
monitoring in the Control Room.
CR Level Control
The CR LEVEL CONTROL determines the overall loudness of the signal
being monitored as it appears in the Control Room speakers. As the control
is turned clockwise, the loudness increases up to a maximum at the limit of
mechanical rotation. To decrease the loudness, turn the control in a counter-
clockwise direction.
