Phone Section
Overview
The PHONE SECTION is comprised of a SELECT BUTTON, four
BUS ASSIGN BUTTONS (PGM, AUD, MONO1, and MONO2), a
CUE BUTTON, a four character DISPLAY, two FADERS, and ON
AND OFF BUTTONS. Operation of the following controls is de-
scribed in the “Console Operation” chapter.
The phone section controls the audio for two callers. Not only do we
have to control where the audio for each caller is going, and at what
signal strength, but we also need to control the audio that the caller
hears (also known as caller feed). Since the signal input to the section
is always the caller, there is no need to display that information. Instead,
the DISPLAY in the phone section shows the caller feed.
Also, the callers may need to hear one feed when the combined
caller audio is assigned to a bus and the phone section is ON (on air) and
a different feed when the combined caller audio is not assigned to a bus
or the phone section is OFF (off air).
To prevent possible feedback and annoying echo, the caller feed
never contains the caller’s own voice. Each caller feed will, however,
contain the voice of the other caller (if is one is present).
SELECT BUTTON - selecting what the caller hears.
The audio selected by the phone section is the audio the callers will
hear, and that audio may be different depending on whether the caller
is off air or on air.
The on air caller feed source can be any signal appearing at a
console input connector, any of the four main buses, or either of the
general purpose mix-minus buses. The caller feed will never contain
the caller’s own voice.
When the phone section is on and a bus assign switch is pressed, the
on air caller feed may be automatically reselected to be the assigned bus
output, minus the caller’s own voice. If you don’t want the on air caller
feed to be automatically selected in this fashion, press the desired bus
assign switch while the phone is still off. This feature may have been
disabled by the installer.
