Physical Network Separation Mode
When the device operates in the multiple IP interfaces scheme, it uses a
single
physical
Ethernet port (located on its RTM) to connect to these networks. Using VLAN tags and an
external VLAN-aware switch, the traffic can be directed to separate physical networks. In
contrast, in the Physical Network Separation mode, supported only when the device
houses a TP-8410 blade, each application type (OAMP, Call Control and RTP Media) has
its own
dedicated
physical Ethernet port. The device splits the traffic between these
different application types into different physical ports. This Physical Network Separation
feature eliminates the need for a VLAN-aware switch using VLAN tags to separate the
different traffic of each network. In this mode, the device actually implements the same
scheme internally. This means that VLAN tags are used internally, but traffic is not sent or
received with VLAN tags.
Physical Network Separation can be configured in the Web (or by using the
ini
file
parameter EnableNetworkPhysicalSeparation).
Notes:
•
Physical Network Separation is supported only for Mediant 3000 housing
TP-8410.
•
Physical Network Separation supports three interfaces (OAMP, Control,
and Media) and all three must be configured when operating in Physical
Network Separation mode.
•
When the Physical Network Separation mode is enabled, user VLANs
are not supported.
•
When operating in this mode, OAMP traffic is sent and received from/to
the designated physical port (i.e., on the PEM); when operating with a
single physical interface, the GbE port on the RTM-8410 is used.
Each of the TP-8410 blades (Active and Redundant) has its own dedicated and redundant
physical GBE port for Media traffic. This interface is directly available through the RTM.
The other four Ethernet ports are available through the PEM module, but are shared by
both blades. The active blade is the one connected to these ports.
The physical interfaces are summarized as follows:
Media network interface:
provided by the Gigabit Ethernet port on the RTM-8410.
The Control and OAMP network interfaces are provided by the 10/100BaseT Ethernet
ports located on the two Power Entry Modules (PEM), as follows:
