2.1. MOTOR-DRIVEN PUMP UNIT
DESCRIPTION
The machine is fitted with a motor-driven pump
made up of a pump and a 24 volt fan-cooled motor.
It is placed on the left front side of the machine.
INFORMATION ON GENERAL UPKEEP
A gear oil pump gives a dependable performance over a long period if the pump operates in a
correctly maintained system. This includes the use of correct grade and clean oil, a regular change
of filter, and frequent inspections of the system components. However, when a pump no longer
works, it is important to find out all the causes and to eliminate these so as to avoid repetitive
breakdowns.
GENERAL INFORMATION
ABRASIVE WEAR CAUSED BY FINE PARTICLES
Abrasive wear caused by fine particles is the most frequent cause of pump breakdown.
The symptom is a gradual reduction in power, and therefore the performance of the apparatus.
The fine particles or other foreign bodies circulating in the system cause wear on all the
components like on the casings, bearing surfaces and bearings of these components. Always
clean the tank plugs, funnels and other zones around the filling hole before opening the tank.
Immediately protect all the disconnected hoses, connections and diverse openings.
AIR INLET OR CAVITATION
An air inlet causes aeration of the oil. The air can enter the system by a small leak at suction or by
the agitation of the oil surface in the tank. The surface agitation is produced when the return oil
arrives above the oil level. This can occur because of too low a level.
Cavitation is the formation and bursting of steam bubbles in the oil. This is the result of a restricted
suction of the pump. Cavitation occurs more easily when the oil is cold. A pump which cavitates or
operates with an aerated fluid is abnormally noisy, and the system works in a jerky manner.
LACK OF OIL
When a breakdown is caused through lack of oil, deterioration is usually rapid.
This type of breakdown can occur for two reasons:
(a) the oil level is low in the tank, or (b) there is an air intake in the suction hose.
