How to Control the Machine
While Grinding
Controlling the grinder requires understanding the fol-
lowing operations:
•
Reversing the feed system (manual and automatic)
•
Operating the compression roll
•
Monitoring machine systems
1
WARNING
Before placing material into the hopper, know
how to control the grinder.
The control system has safeguards (Table 4) to prevent
certain systems from operating at the wrong time. Also
see “Automatic Reversal” on page 74 and “Alert Mes-
sages from Machine Operation” on page 93.
* This prevents the grinder from processing material with no
discharge path available. Otherwise the rotor may be-
come clogged or jammed.
Reversing the Feed System
Manual Reversal
◆
To reverse ONLY the compression roll:
Press
R
OLL
R
EVERSE
on the remote transmitter.
N
OTE
:
This function is available only on the remote trans-
mitter.
◆
To reverse the feed chain AND the
compression roll:
Do one of the following steps:
•
Press
F
EED
R
EVERSE
on the remote transmitter.
OR
•
Press the
F
EED
(Reverse) button on the
Control Panel.
Automatic Reversal
The following conditions can cause the feed chain and
compression roll to stop and run in the reverse direction
(For details on these automatic control features, see
“Peterson Adaptive Control System” on page 118).
Hydraulic pressure too high:
Because heavy loads can cause hydraulic pressure to
rise too high, automatic controls are in place to protect
the hydraulic systems.
Excessive pressure in the feed system hydraulics causes
the feed system to stop and run in the reverse direction
for a set time (about 2 seconds). When hydraulic pres-
sure returns to normal, the feed system returns to the
forward direction.
Excessive pressure in the discharge conveyor hydrau-
lics also causes the feed system to reverse.
Engine RPM too low:
An excessive load on the machine systems can cause the
engine to slow down. If the engine RPM falls too low,
the feed system will stop. If engine speed falls lower,
the feed will begin to run in the reverse direction.
When the engine speed returns to normal, the feed sys-
tem changes to the forward direction.
