Peterson Adaptive Control System
Automatic control of the feed and compression systems
is known as the Peterson Adaptive Control System. This
automatic control starts when the operator starts the
feed system at the control panel.
Some of the feed system settings can be adjusted. See
“Adjust Setup Menu” on page 130.
Feed Speed
The numbers used in the following explanation are
examples
taken from Figure 140 on page 116, which
shows a typical setup.
The feed speed (ft/min) is set by the operator on the
main panel and displayed on the machine status page.
At the maximum no-load engine speed (2100 RPM), the
feed runs at the set speed of 30 ft/min. As the engine
slows down under load, the feed speed decreases. If the
engine reaches the feed stop point (1800 RPM), the feed
system stops.
If the engine speed continues to be pulled down to the
reverse point (1750 RPM), the feed system reverses
(maximum reverse speed is 75% of the forward speed
setting). When the engine recovers, the feed returns to
the forward direction.
Compression Roll Speed and
Pressure
The numbers used in the following explanation are
examples
taken from Figure 140 on page 116, which
shows a typical setup.
The compression roll speed corresponds to the feed
speed at a set ratio, in this case, of 1.5 times the feed
speed.
When the compression roll is between the Max Auto
Lift point and the Min Down point, it floats up and
down on the feed material.
If the compression roll is forced above the Max Auto
Lift height of 35 in. (90 cm), the hydraulic system
applies down pressure until the compression roll goes to
32 in. (80 cm)
If the compression roll is forced above the Max Push
height of 40 in. (1 m), the feed system, including the
compression roll, reverses (maximum reverse speed is
75% of the forward speed setting).
If Auto Down Pressure is selected on the control panel,
the hydraulic system applies a brief downward pressure
pulse to the compression roll every 6 seconds while the
compression roll is floating (between the Max Auto Lift
point and the Min Down point).
If Land Clearing mode is selected on the Machine
Options Page, the compression roll height settings are
increased by 15 in. (38 cm).
Other Automatic Actions
•
If the hydraulic pressure for the discharge conveyor
is above 4000 psi, the feed system reverses.
•
If the feed system hydraulic pressure is above 4500
psi for 3 seconds, the controller reverses the feed
system for 2 seconds.
•
If the impact release system is struck hard enough
from a non-grindable object, the IRS limit switch
trips, the feed system reverses, the compression roll
lifts momentarily, and engine speed slows to idle.
•
If one or both of the pivot shaft limit switches trip,
the feed system reverses, the compression roll lifts
momentarily, and the engine shuts off.
For other automatic responses, see “How to Control the
Machine While Grinding” on page 74.
The feed system is also affected by the Material Bridge
feature (see “Anti-Bridge Page” on page 123) and the
Compression Roll Stall Bump feature (see “Compres-
sion Roll Stall Bump Page” on page 124).
