Job Site Safety
Site conditions vary widely. Your machine may not be
equipped with all devices mentioned. Local or federal
safety codes and the safety rules of your organization
may add other safety concerns.
Create a Safe Workplace
For a safe workplace, wear protective gear, follow basic
safety rules, and practice safe behaviors.
Wear Protective Gear
Anyone near the 6700B while it is operating must wear
hard hats, eye protection, and ear protection. Heavy-
soled shoes with toe protection and a high visibility vest
or other enhanced visibility clothing, and other safety
equipment are recommended and may be required by
local codes.
Follow Basic Safety Rules
Adhere to the following safety rules while on the
grinder job site:
Get Proper Training:
Do not operate the machine
unless you have been trained in its safe use.
Stay Away from Loading Operations:
Do not stand
or walk near the loader when it is loading the machine
hopper.
Operate in a Ventilated Area:
Always start and
operate engine in a well-ventilated area. Engine exhaust
contains products of combustion that are harmful to
health. The engine uses oxygen and creates a deadly
atmosphere. In enclosed areas, vent engine exhaust out-
side.
Wear Eye Protection When Using High Pressure
Air:
Using high-pressure air to clean the machine or for
other maintenance can be hazardous. Use reduced pres-
sure nozzles or other means to keep air pressures at or
below 30 psi (2.1 bar). This is the maximum safe air
pressure to use for cleaning the machine.
Avoid Contact with Oil:
Used and hot motor oil
vapors can be hazardous. Inhaling vapors or swallowing
oil can be dangerous. Avoid contact with used motor oil.
Lift Properly:
Avoid twisting or over-reaching, espe-
cially when lifting or carrying heavy objects. When
work requires heavy lifting, get help or use mechanical
assistance.
Practice Safe Behaviors
A safe workplace requires practicing the following
behaviors:
Instruct Workers and Visitors:
The owner and oper-
ator must make sure that support personnel, observers,
or others needing to enter the operating area or work site
are aware of hazards and are properly trained. Admit
only authorized personnel into the operating zone. See
“Hazard Zones” on page 36.
Don’t Work Alone:
It is unsafe to work alone on a job
site.
Communicate Visually with the Operator:
Before
entering the work area while the 6700B is operating,
make eye contact or other confirmed communication
with the operator. This signals your intent to approach.
Approach only when it is safe to do so.
Stand Back:
Before starting the machine, make sure
everyone is well away from the operating area. Allow
only trained personnel in hazard zones. See “Hazard
Zones” on page 36.
Shout Warnings:
Before starting the machine, follow
the recommended warning procedures of your site. Typ-
ically, shout a loud warning, and then listen and wait 10
seconds before starting the machine.
Stay Alert:
After the machine is running at the required
speed, it can be left to run under the supervision of the
loader operator who is feeding material to it. Other
trained support personnel may need to be in the operat-
ing area. Everyone must remain alert and actively avoid
hazards.
Maintain an Adequate First Aid Kit:
Keep a well-
stocked, accessible first-aid kit on site.
Provide a Suitable Maintenance Area:
Consider
transporting the machine to a shop, enclosed area, or an
area away from regular job site activity for periodic
inspection and maintenance.
