4 Use
4.2 New patient
CAUTION:
For the safety of the patient and to optimize ventilation performance, the patient
characteristics should be appropriate to the patient being ventilated.
4.2.1 Selecting the patient category
Selecting the patient category enables the following elements to be adapted to the patient's morpholo-
gy:
•
the default ventilation and alarm settings;
•
the possible settings for the ventilation parameters and the alarms.
For further information, see Performance and characteristics on page 111.
The patient category can be selected on the start or standby screen. To select the patient category,
press the appropriate key.
4.2.2 Selecting the patient size and gender
Selecting the size and gender displays the predicted VT/Weight coefficient in the help window for set-
ting the modes on the basis of volume. It also displays VTe/PBW (exhaled volume/predicted weight)
monitoring.
To specify the gender, press the
Gender
button, turn the rotating knob to change the value and press
the rotating button to validate.
To specify the size, press the
Size
button, turn the rotating knob to change the value and press the ro-
tating button to validate.
Note:
The patient's predicted weight is calculated using the patient's characteristics.
For further information on the calculation of the predicted weight, see section Calculation of
predicted body weight on page 131.
CAUTION:
The diameter of the patient circuit hose must also be appropriate.
See the table below:
Patient category
VT range (mL)
Internal diameter of patient circuit tub-
ing (mm)
Adult
100 - 2000
22 mm
Child
50 - 500
VT > 100 mL: 22 or 15 mm
VT < 100 mL: 15 mm or less
