“Sample Did
Not Freeze”
Freeze “buzz” occurred
1. Was the sample tube left
empty?
2. Is the freezing point of
the sample beyond the
range of the instrument
(see Table 1).
3. Does the sample contain
many small bubbles or
froth?
4. Is the sample very vis-
cous?
5. Is the probe configura-
tion correct?

Suggested Action
1. Test another aliquot of
that sample in a clean
sample tube.
2. Try testing samples
known to be within the
range of the instrument.
3. Make sure samples con-
tain no bubbles or froth
before testing. Decrease
the sample stir ampli-
tude, if necessary, to
avoid generating bubbles
before the freeze buzz
occurs.
4. The 3900 is not designed
to test thick or very vis-
cous samples.
5. Check/correct the probe
bin numbers.
Test another aliquot of that
sample in a clean sample
tube.
