To convert a document resulting in logical bookmarks, keep these
points in mind:
•
Choose the option that is most convenient for your purposes. If you
use a template, use its styles.
•
If your document already contains a table of contents, simply select
the Convert Word Bookmarks option in the Bookmarks tab of the
Acrobat PDFMaker dialog. That way, content that is included in the
Table of Contents is automatically mirrored in the Bookmarks pane in
Acrobat.
•
If you aren’t constrained by policy or other business-related issues, and
you aren’t an advanced user of Office products, use the Word head-
ings conversion option. It is simple to attach a Heading1 style to major
document headings, a Heading2 style to subheadings, a Heading3 to
lower-level headings, and so on.
•
In the document, don’t use headings or styles for any text but the text
you intend to use for bookmarks. Anything on the page that uses the
heading or style is converted to a bookmark regardless of whether it
contains any text.
•
You will produce blank bookmarks if you use headings to create
blank space on your page. Instead of using a heading style to show
a blank space, create a custom style for your templates that includes
extra space before and after the paragraph.
Cut and Paste
Cut and paste bookmarks
rather than trying to reorder
and nest them in the Book-
marks pane. Click the book-
mark you want to remove, and
choose Cut from the Book-
marks pane’s Options menu.
Then click the bookmark pre-
ceding the location where you
want the bookmark moved,
and choose Paste After
Selected Bookmark.
Using Destination
Options Correctly
As with many other settings, a
magnification option applies
until you change it. In other
words, every time you add a
new bookmark, it inherits the
destination or magnification
last specified. Take advantage
of the inheritance when you
are adding a set of bookmarks
to a document. But be careful
if you add bookmarks during a
different session—if the set-
tings you use for some book-
marks are different from the
settings used with other book-
marks, readers will find the
progress through your docu-
ment jumpy and distracting.
