The 3M™ Versaflo™ V-500E Regulator is designed to be used in
conjunction with one of the approved Headtops (see Reference Leaflet).
This product meets the requirements of EN14594 (Respiratory protective
devices – Continuous flow compressed air line breathing apparatus).
The adjustable regulator/flow control unit is waist mounted and is fitted
with an internal, replaceable charcoal filter, warning whistle and integral
silencer. The regulator has a 1/4 inch BSP inlet and an auxiliary outlet port
capable of accepting paint spray equipment or pneumatic tools.
APPROVALS
These products are type approved and audited annually by BSI, Kitemark

LIMITATIONS OF USE
Use this respirator strictly in accordance with all instructions:
• contained in this booklet
• accompanying other components of the system (e.g. V-500E Reference
Leaflet, Headtop User Instructions).
Do not use in concentrations of contaminants above those given in the
Headtop user instructions.
Do not use for respiratory protection against unknown atmospheric
contaminants or when concentrations of contaminants are unknown or
immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. (3M
definition. Individual countries may apply their own limits on oxygen
deficiency. Seek advice if in doubt).
Only use with Headtops and Spares/Accessories listed in the reference
leaflet and within the usage conditions given in the Technical
Specification.
Only for use by trained, competent personnel.
Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow into the headtop decreases or stops.
c) Breathing becomes difficult.
d) Dizziness or other distress occurs.
e) You smell or taste contaminants or irritation occurs.
Never modify or alter this product. Replace parts only with original 3M
spare parts.
Do not use oxygen or oxygen-enriched air.
In case of intended use in explosive atmospheres, contact 3M Technical
Service.
When used in temperatures below +4°C, the moisture content of the
breathing air should be controlled to avoid it freezing the apparatus.
Always ensure that:
• the source of air supply is known;
• the purity of the air supply is known;
• the air supply is of a breathable quality, to EN12021.
Ensure the capacity of the air supply system is sufficient for every user
connected to it.
If it is intended to drive pneumatic accessories via the auxiliary port,
always ensure that at least minimum flow conditions to the headtop are
met when the accessory is consuming its maximum airflow requirement.
At very high work rates, the pressure in the headtop may become
negative at peak inhalation flow.
This product should only be used in work situations where the risk of
damage to the compressed air supply tube is low and where movements
of the wearer are limited.
The compressed air supply should be equipped with an appropriately
rated and adjusted pressure relief safety valve.
These units are not to be used with mobile compressed air supply
systems.
Materials which may come into contact with the wearer's skin are not
known to cause allergic reactions to the majority of individuals.
This product contains no components made from natural rubber latex.
EQUIPMENT MARKING
For Headtop marking please see appropriate Headtop user
instructions.The V-500E Regulator is marked to EN14594.The V-500E
Regulator is marked with a date of manufacture. The Compressed Air
Supply tubes are marked to EN14594, EN270 and/or EN1835 as
appropriate. They are also marked as follows: - 308-00-35P and
308-00-40P are marked A - suitable for use with Class A devices
(EN14594). - 308-00-72P is marked 'Heat Resistant' and 'Anti static'.
PREPARATION FOR USE
Check apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly assembled. Any
damaged or defective parts must be replaced with original 3M spare parts
before use.
Undertake pre-use checks on headtop assembly as outlined in the
appropriate user instruction.
Inlet couplings must be fitted to the V-500E Regulator prior to initial use,
ensuring an airtight seal (Please see V-500E Reference Leaflet for list of
3M approved couplings).
Couplings should be fitted, using the washer supplied, and tightened
using a torque wrench to 15Nm ± 1Nm.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
DONNING
1. Select an approved breathing tube (see Reference leaflet for list of 3M
approved breathing tubes) and connect top end of the breathing tube to
the headtop assembly. Inspect the gasket located on the bayonet end of
the breathing tube (i.e. the end that connects to the unit) for signs of wear
or damage. If the seal is worn or damaged, the breathing tube should be
replaced.
2. Adjust and buckle the waist belt with the V-500E Regulator comfortably
around your waist and connect the bottom end of the breathing tube to the
outlet of the unit.
3. Adjust the headtop as outlined in the appropriate user instruction.
4. Connect the compressed air supply tube between the optional 3M
Aircare - Air Filtration Unit and the V-500E Regulator, ensuring the
pressure at the Air Filtration Unit is adjusted as described in section,
Technical Specifications.
5. Ensure at least minimum airflow into the headtop is achieved and
adjust the airflow of the V-500E Regulator for maximum comfort. (The
warning whistle will sound if below minimum airflow – please see fault
finding).
IN USE
Use with the air supply off is not normal, little or no protection is
provided and a build up of carbon dioxide and depletion of oxygen
within the Headtop may occur, vacate the contaminated area
immediately.
1. Take care to prevent the breathing tube from becoming looped around
protruding objects.
2. Do not remove the headtop or turn off the air supply until you
have vacated the contaminated area.
3. If during use the air supply stops or is reduced and the whistle sounds,
vacate the contaminated area immediately and investigate the cause.
4. The 'in-use' life of the product will vary with frequency and conditions of
use. In everyday use, it is recommended that the product is discarded
after approximately 5 years service, provided the product is stored and
maintained as stated below. Some extreme conditions may result in
deterioration over a shorter period.
DOFFING
Do not remove the headtop or turn off the air supply until you have
vacated the contaminated area.
1. Lift the Headtop off the head.
2. Turn off the air supply to the V-500E Regulator.
3. Unbuckle the waist belt.
NOTE If the respirator has been used in an area that has caused it to
become contaminated with a substance requiring special
decontamination procedures it should be placed in a suitable
container and sealed until it can be decontaminated or discarded.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Use a clean cloth dampened with a mild solution of water and liquid
household soap. Do not use petrol, chlorinated degreasing fluids (such as
trichloroethylene), organic solvents or abrasive cleaning agents to clean
any part of the equipment. To disinfect use wipes as detailed in Reference
Leaflet. Allow product to dry before use.
