8.2.1 Protect Against Oxidation
The following maintenance inspections should be performed on a regular basis to minimize rust:
• Remove any buildup of organic materials on the galvanized surfaces as they produce acids that could cause
damage to the galvanized coating.
• Check the horizontal surfaces of the grain dryer for any rain water ponding. Dry and correct the source of
ponding immediately.
• Rinse the exterior surfaces with fresh water to improve the useful life of grain dryers installed in coastal or
acid rain areas.
• Check for small areas of white rust periodically. Use steel brush and touch up paint with a wash primer and
enamel paint.
• Repair large areas of white paint or any red rusted areas by sanding to base metal and painting with a
quality zinc-rich paint.
8.2.2 Roof, Stairs, and Vents
• Clean the debris off of grain dryer roof, peak ring, roof vents, and stairs after filling.
• Inspect all roof panels, supporting ribs, stairs, steps, and vents for damage and missing, loose or broken
bolts/nuts. Repair as necessary.
• Ensure proper function and attachments of all grain dryer openings such as roof caps. Make certain all
latches and hold down clips are used as intended.
• Ensure roof ring expanders and splices are in their correct position and properly tightened.
• Check roof vents for blockage. Clean any debris to allow free airflow and prevent damage to the roof.
8.2.3 Ladders, Catwalks, and Supports
• Be certain that ladders, catwalks and platforms are securely fastened to the grain dryer.
• Check all connections between catwalk and supports for bent braces and loose bolts. Repair as necessary.
• Check ladder for any worn-out or loose rungs, loose or missing bolts. Repair as necessary. If sheared bolt is
discovered, contact Westeel. It may be an indication of a more serious problem.
8.2.4 Stiffeners, Sidewalls, and Doors
• Check for gaps between stiffeners, buckling of stiffeners or sidewall, stiffener contact on supports/floor,
concrete level, and missing, loose, or broken bolts/nuts. Repair as necessary.
• Shim all stiffener base plates if void appears between base plate and concrete.
• Ensure each stiffener base is correctly anchored to the foundation.
• Check corrugation around the door to ensure a watertight seal.
8.2.5 Foundations
• Inspect grain dryers and foundations for structural problems.
• Inspect concrete for exposed rebar, unusual cracking, or spalling of concrete.
• Be sure all anchor bolts are tighten and undamaged.
