8. Maintenance
Before continuing, ensure you have completely read and understood this manual’s
Safety section, in addition to the safety information in the section(s) below.
8.1. Maintenance Safety
• Keep components in good condition. Follow the maintenance
procedures.
• Ensure the service area is clean, dry, and has sufficient
lighting.
• Do not modify any components without written authorization
from the manufacturer. Modification can be dangerous and
result in serious injuries.
• Lock out power source and shut off gas valves.
• All gas components, connections, and appliances are to be
serviced or maintained by a qualified gas technician.
• After maintenance is complete, replace all guards, service
doors, and/or covers.
• Use only genuine Westeel replacement parts or equivalent.
Use of unauthorized parts will void warranty. If in doubt,
contact Westeel or your local dealer.
8.2. Maintenance Overview
The grain dryer requires minimal maintenance, which should be performed periodically. There are two main
considerations when maintaining the grain dryer, preventing and controlling rust and replacing fasteners (nuts,
bolts, etc) with replacements direct from the manufacturer. Refer to the maintenance procedures in the
sections that follow to keep the grain dryer in optimal condition.
Rust
Virtually the only thing that may limit the useful life of the grain dryer is rust. The galvanized coating on the
steel used to fabricate the grain dryer will provide many years of service if properly maintained. However, some
rusting over a period of years can be expected with any galvanized products exposed to the weather.
Fasteners
Bolts and nuts used in Westeel grain dryers are specialty hardware that are an inherent part of the overall grain
dryer design, and cannot be reliably replaced with different hardware, including those that might by
specification appear to be of equivalent design or strength. If additional bolts or nuts are required for any
reason (e.g. replacement/repair or insufficient supply during construction), contact your Westeel dealer.
When tightening bolts, tighten the nut on the bolt until they are snug-tight. Snug-tight is the tightness that is
attained with a few impacts of an impact wrench or the full effort of an ironworker using an ordinary spud
wrench to bring the connected plies into firm contact.
