Manual vs. Automatic Counting
The Versacount II+ will keep an accurate count of parts and empty pockets regardless of whether
a reel is transferred by hand or by using the Versacount II+’s take-up motors.
It is usually most efficient to allow the Versacount II+ to function automatically, using the STOP/
GO key or foot switch and the speed control. However, if a very close inspection is necessary,
the operator can feed all or part of a reel though the counter by hand.
Using Stop Counts and the EPD
The stop count setting can be used in several ways to automate common tasks. If the task is to
confirm specific number of parts on the reel, the set the stop count to that number. If a reel is
being marked at regular intervals, set the stop count to the interval of marking. For example, if
marks are placed every 100 parts, set the stop count to 100. If the task is to determine the total
number of parts on the reel, set the stop count to 0 so that the counter will continue to the end of
the reel.
If an EPD option is installed on the counter, it will automatically detect the end of a reel when it
detects five (5) consecutive empty pockets. This feature is always available if the EPD is
enabled. It can be used if the operator is determining the total number of parts present on a reel
rather than counting to a specific count and stopping.
The EPD and Carrier Tapes
The EPD is a through hole sensor with both an emitter and receiver located above and below the
carrier tape. Because it relies on detecting a beam of light passing through the carrier tape pock-
ets to detect an empty pocket, it will function properly only when using black carrier tapes that
have center holes or clear plastic carrier tape.
It should be noted, too, that the EPD is designed to function properly only when the parts counted
meet a size minimum. For black carrier tape, the parts should be at least 0.05” in width (0805
package). For clear carrier tape, the parts should be at least 0.063” in width (1206 package).
