15. SCALABLE FONTS KIT
15.1
Description
This gold label guarantees the quality and
functionality of original Speedo and True-
Type products from UBI.
Products from other suppliers might work,
but the functionality cannot be guaranteed,
nor is any support given by UBI.
EasyCoder 501 and 501 E printers can be fitted with an optional
firmware package, that allows the printer to use scalable outline
fonts in Speedo and TrueType formats, unless the printer is fitted
with Flash Memory packages instead of EPROMs in IC-100 –
IC-103. IC-104 and IC-105 must be vacant.
The kit consists of two EPROMs and a GAL circuit. The EPROMs
contain a selection of outline fonts and firmware for scaling them,
whereas the GAL circuit is necessary for the printer to use the
firmware.
Speedo and TrueType are standard outline font formats for personal
computers developed by Bitstream, Inc. and Apple Computer, Inc.
respectively. There are thousands of different fonts available from
UBI Printer AB at a low cost. The fonts come as files in PC format
and can be downloaded to the printer via the Kermit communication
protocol or be copied to a memory card, which is inserted in the
printer's optional memory card adapter.
The UBI Fingerprint statement
FONT
converts the selected outline
font according to the specified characteristics to UBI's bitmap font
format, after which it can be used as any other installed bitmap font
(also see UBI Fingerprint Reference Manual).
The UBI Shell startup program for Enhanced printer models offers
another convenient way of scaling outline fonts. When a Scalable
Fonts kit is installed in an Enhanced printer, additional menus will
be displayed in UBI Shell. Refer to the UBI Shell Enhanced Startup
Manual.
The Scalable Fonts Kit consist of:
• 2 EPROM packages containing the firmware for scaling outline
fonts plus a selection of outline font files and bar codes.
• 1 GAL circuit.
