approved for non-shielded use. If the cable is shielded, the
shielding m ust be grounded at one end (grounding is
typically done at the starter or supply end).
Care m ust be taken w hile routing the incom ing cables to
ensure that cable loads or tensions are not applied to the
term inal or prem ature term inal failure could result.
M otor Terminals
Field-provided, ring-type lugs, w ith no sharp edges or
corners, m ust be used by a qualified installer to connect
the pow er w iring to the m otor term inals. Follow all
instructions provided w ith the field-provided lugs to
ensure proper connections.
Im port ant :
The use of stress cones is highly
recom m ended to reduce and control
longitudinal and radial electrical stresses at
the cable ends.
Prior to assem bly the term inal stud, nuts, and lug should
be inspected and cleaned to ensure they are not dam aged
or contam inated. When attaching starter leads to 2.3–
6.6 kV m otor term inals, the M 14x2 brass jam nuts should
be tightened to a m axim um torque of 32.5–40.7 N·m (24–
30 ft·lb). Always use a second w rench to backup the
assem bly and prevent applying excessive torque to the
term inal shaft.

(see com pressor m odel num ber for m otor fram e)
use the sam e m otor term inals as the 10kV–13.8kV
m otors.
The m otor term inal on a 10–13.8kV m otor has a copper
shaft that is threaded M 14 x 2–6 G. Brass nuts are provided
on the m otor term inals to retain the lugs, and the final
connection should be tightened to 32.5–40.7 N·m (24–
30 ft·lb).
Before beginning w iring and torquing, ensure proper
m otor term inal care and do not apply any excess stress.
Ground Wire Terminal Lug
A ground w ire lug is provided in the m otor term inal box to
allow the field connection of an earth ground. The lug w ill
accept a field supplied ground w ire of #8 to #2 AWG. For
AWG/M CM equivalents in m m

, refer to
Table 12, p. 47
.
After com pleting the field connection of w iring, inspect
and clean the m otor term inals and m otor housing, and
rem ove any debris before reinstalling the m otor term inal
box cover. The cover m ust be re-installed onto the m otor
term inal box and all bolts installed. Do not operate the
chiller w ith the m otor term inal box cover rem oved or w ith
any loose or m issing cover bolts.
NOTICE:
M otor Terminal Damage!
Applying torque to the motor terminal w hen tightening
lugs could cause equipment or property-only damage.
Always use a second w rench to back-up the assembly
and prevent the application of torque to the terminal
shaft.
