Insulation
Unit Insulation Requirements
Factory-installed insulation is available as an option for all
units. Factory installation does not include insulation of
the chiller feet; if required, insulation for chiller feet is
provided by others. In applications w here the chiller is not
factory-insulated, install insulation over the areas outlined
and highlighted w ith dashed lines as show n in
Figure 25,
p. 40
.
Insulate all 6.35-m m (1/4-in.) eductor lines, one from the
suction cover and one from the evaporator to prevent
sw eating.
The quantities of insulation required based on unit size
and insulation thickness are listed in
Table 10
. Insulation
thickness is determ ined at norm al design conditions w hich
are:
•
standard com fort-cooling leaving chilled water
tem perature
•
29.4°C (85°F) dry bulb am bient tem perature
•
75 percent relative hum idity
Operation outside of norm al design conditions as defined
above m ay require additional insulation; contact Trane for
further review.
N ot e: If the unit is not factory-insulated: install insulation
around the evaporator bulbw ells and ensure that
the bulbw ells and connections for the waterbox
drains and vents are still accessible after insulation
is applied. The sensor m odules (LLIDs) and
interconnecting four w ire cable (IPC bus) m ust be
raised up above the field-installed insulation.
Secure the IPC bus to the insulation top/outer
surface after insulation is com pleted.
Im port ant :
Do not insulate the m otor housing, unit
w iring, or sensor m odules.
Insulation Thickness
Requirements
Factory applied insulation.
All low-tem perature
surfaces are covered w ith 19.05 m m (3/4 in.) Arm aflex
®
II
or equal (therm al conductivity = 0.036 W/m
2
-K
[0.25 Btu/h-ft
2
]), including the evaporator, waterboxes,
suction elbow, econom izer, and piping.
The insulation is Arm aflex or equivalent closed cell
elastom eric insulation to prevent the form ation of
condensation in environm ents w ith a relative hum idity up
to 75%. Chillers in high hum idity areas or ice storage, low
leaving water tem perature (less than 2.2°C [36°F] chilled
water tem perature/glycol) units m ay require double
thickness to prevent form ation of condensation.

Notes:
1 . Unit s ar e NOT insulat ed on t he m ot or or r efr igerant drain lines.
2 . 19.05- m m ( 3/ 4- in.) sheet insulat ion is inst alled on t he evaporat or,
evaporat or w at er boxes, suct ion elbow, suct ion cover, econom izer,
liquid lines, and piping.
3 . Copper oil educt or lines requir e pipe insulat ion.
NOTICE:
Insulation Damage!
To prevent damage to factory installed insulation:
•
Do not allow the insulation to be exposed to
excessive sunlight. Store indoors or cover w ith
canvas to prevent exposure.
•
Do not use thinners and solvents or other types of
paint. Use only water base latex.
Failure to follow these instructions could result in
insulation damage.
