3.6.7. Head Positioning Mechanism
This mechanism includes two main functions:
- the
Head Stepping Mechanism
which places the magnetic head in any position on
magnetic tape with resolution 0.0033 mm.
- the
Head Servo Mechanism
which moves the head in the range of ± 0.075 mm in order
to follow the servo track and thus also the data track. (Not for Tandberg SLR7).
3.6.7.1. Head Stepping Mechanism
Function of
mechanism
The stepping mechanism serves to place the magnetic head in the correct position with
respect to tape.
This function is used for both servo and non-servo formats.
Type of mechanism
Double-screw (worm gear) preloaded mechanism controlled by a stepper motor.
Head movement per
step (resolution)
0.0033 mm (0.0001299 in.) per step, non-accumulating.
Number of steps
between adjacent
tracks
Servo formats:
ALRF-6:
10 steps
ALRF-1:
10 steps
MLR3 (SLR50):
10 steps
QIC-5010-DC:
10 steps
SLR6 (SLR24):
10 steps
Non-servo formats:
QIC-2GB:
42 steps
QIC-4GB:
38 steps
ALRF-2:
30 steps
3.6.7.2. Head Servo Mechanism (Not for Tandberg SLR7)
Function of
mechanism
The Head Servo Mechanism serves to keep the magnetic head in the correct position with
respect to the servo track prewritten on tape, and thus make the write and read operations
insensitive to relative, transversal movements between tape and the magnetic head.
Type of mechanism
Voice coil based linear motor with minimal magnetic stray field outside the motor and thus
harmless to any media defined for use in the Tandberg SLR Product Line Drive.
Servo movement
range
± 0.075 mm (0.003 in.)
