9. General Preventative Maintenance of Atlas™
Auto 40T Presses
As stated in the previous Fault Finding, Causes and Remedy section,
the Atlas™ Auto 40T Hydraulic Presses should give years of trouble
free operation, if used and cared for correctly.
It is recommended to keep the press in as clean a condition as
possible, particularly within the lower piston pressing face area (
7
) of
the press to help prolong the working lifetime of the components
involved in the pressing procedure. If working in an excessively dusty
or dirty environment or with fine powdery samples to be pressed try to
avoid an accumulation of dirt or residue building up around the
pressing position cylinder assembly. In normal operation there will be a
thin film of protective oil around the outer circumference of the piston
as it travels up and down in its cylinder assembly to protect the metal
surface. However, if this mixes with dirt deposits, over time excessive
wear may occur from the piston travel within the cylinder that can lead
to an oil system pressure failure from inadequate sealing of the O-ring
components.
Checking the Oil Level and Changing the Oil
The Atlas™ Auto 40T Press is supplied from new filled with CL37
grade hydraulic oil. The oil reservoir within the electronics box at the
rear of the press is accessible by removal of the rear cover. There is a
maximum and minimum oil level mark on the oil reservoir and
1.0 litre
of oil is in the reservoir when it is filled to the maximum mark.
Depending on a typical suspected usage of the press (circa 50
pressings per day at maximum tonnage loads), Specac would
recommend that the oil in the pressing system is changed every year.
However, if there is an increased rate of usage on daily basis, then it
may be prudent to change the oil every 6 months. Change of the oil
and a subsequent bleed of any trapped air in the oil which may be
introduced from a new fill of oil is a procedure that can be carried out
by the user of the Atlas™ Auto 40T Press, if it is not convenient or
