5. Description
5.1 Application
Flow meters are used mainly in large circula-
ting-oil lubrication systems. The flow meters’
task is to split the main line’s volumetric flow
up into parallel, individual volumetric flows as
required and, if necessary, to shut off individual
lines.
Flow meters have proved to be reliable and
flexible, especially on paper machines that of-
ten have several hundred lube points. Flow
meter systems are also used when small ad-
justments and corrections to the lubricant feed
have to be made while the machine is running.
5.2 How SMD low meters work
The lubricant coming from the supply line
lows from the inlet port of the low meter’s
housing into the gear chamber of the gear
wheel-type low indicator, past the gears all the
way to the throttle screw.
The low rate is regulated by the choice (ine
throttle or coarse throttle) and adjustment of
the throttle screw.
Downstream of the throttle screw the now
metered volumetric low of lubricant continues
to the outlet port of the low meter’s housing.
5.3 How the gear wheel-type low indicator
works
The lubricant coming from the supply line
lows from the inlet port of the low meter’s
housing into the gear chamber of the gear
wheel-type low indicator, past the two gears
all the way to the throttle screw.
The volumetric low generated makes the
gears in the gear chamber rotate. A NAMUR
switch attached to one of the gears detects the
gears’ revolutions (pulse detection) and thus
the low rate.
The pulse sequence depends on the setting
of the throttle screw and the volumetric low
associated therewith.

5. Description
