Distance and grid layout
To accurately monitor the ambient dust concentration in a space, several devices must be arranged in a
grid within an appropriate distance of the dust source.
Distance
The further away from the dust source the device is, the more diluted the dust concentration will be
when the dust reaches the device.
DANGER!
If the device is installed too far away from the dust source, the dust concentration at
the source can reach minimum explosible concentration (MEC) even if the device
indicates a dust concentration that is below the alarm limits. An explosion can result in
a serious injury or death. If the device is part of an explosion preventing system, install
the device sufficiently close to the dust source.
The movement speed of a dust cloud slows down the further it gets from the source. This means that a
longer distance between the dust source and measurement point also increases the time it takes for the
device to react to an increase in ambient dust concentration.
Grid layout
To accurately capture the dust concentration in different locations in a space, multiple devices must be
installed in a square grid layout (Figure 19).
